Peter Zimmerman Architects won the 2026 Ocean Home Award in the Traditional Architecture category.

Peter Zimmerman Architects was honored with the 2026 Ocean Home Award in the Traditional Architecture category for projects exceeding 7,000 square feet, recognizing this Northern Maine residence. After locating a waterfront lot with harbor views, the owners imagined a bespoke dwelling that would react to the shifting sun, local fauna, and the shoreline. To bring that concept to life, lead architect Warren Fisher studied the area’s vernacular, taking cues from neighboring buildings and the terrain. The outcome is a cedar-clad sanctuary featuring sweeping roof planes, a granite base, and a combination of sheltered and open porches.

Siting the Home on the Coast

The house is gently oriented toward the rocky shore and nestles amid mature trees. Fisher comments on the placement, stating, “we wanted the massing to have a human scale in the way it touches and connects to the ground.” Main living areas extend laterally along the water’s edge, where floor-to-ceiling glazing erases the separation between interior and exterior while bathing the interior with daylight. A single-depth floor plan admits light and harbor vistas from several angles. Throughout the building’s central axis, volumes step forward and back, suggesting an evolution of form over time.

Utility rooms—including a mudroom, laundry, powder room, and side entrance—project toward the street front. Inside, the ground level prefers distinct chambers rather than an open-plan layout. Transom windows introduce additional illumination and reinforce the airy atmosphere. The Pennsylvania firm Wein Interiors matched the architectural language with a restrained colour scheme drawn from the surrounding environment. Muted tones, organic textures, and natural finishes convey refinement while maintaining comfort.

Winners and Collaborators

The homeowners remained closely involved, collaborating from the earliest planning stages to the final details. The result is a home that feels both deeply personal and perfectly rooted in its setting, a timeless interpretation of coastal Maine.

Key suppliers include Freshwater Stone for countertops and shower slab fabrication, and Savaria for the elevator. Marvin Windows provided the doors and descending sash, while Lowe Hardware supplied the hardware. M2 AV Consulting handled the audio, and Sunlighten provided the sauna. Lutron Home managed the automation, and Bromic supplied exterior heaters.

Interior Design and Materials

At the core of the property, a spacious living room is anchored by an oversized picture window that frames the harbor. Adjacent, the formal dining area is adorned with a custom mural created by Maine artist Dean Barger. The misty shoreline depiction extends the outdoor scenery inside, further merging architecture with nature. The kitchen adds a contemporary touch through water-glazed white-oak cabinets and honed marble sourced from Namibia’s Sky quarry.

From the kitchen, a series of exterior rooms unfolds, each positioned to capture the day’s shifting light and harbor panoramas. A favored spot is the glazed porch, where lowering sash windows slide into hidden recesses at the press of a button. Roll-down screens maintain uninterrupted sightlines while shielding occupants from the elements. Another communal area features a monumental double-sided granite fireplace fabricated by local masons. Fisher remarks on the porch, noting, “The stones are massive yet still have a wonderful scale when sitting around the fire.”
